New experimental theater can’t happen without you! Maker of Worlds at the Dream Up Festival is a sponsored project of Fractured Atlas, a non‐profit arts service organization.
What Is It?
MAKER OF WORLDS is a convention-bending, female-empowering, myth-reclaiming one-woman play that has been invited to the Theater for the New City’s Dream Up Festival in New York. Our Chicago-based, female-majority team needs your help to get there!
What’s It About?
Martha, a deity, decides to destroy the world, because there is no good left in it. A second deity, disguised as her yoga instructor, proposes fighting the system instead. But Martha’s husband Warren built the system, and somewhere on another plane, Martha is still in love with Jim Morrison. One woman plays six characters in MAKER OF WORLDS, a play about creativity, Capitalism, and the divine in all of us.
Mission
The mission of this play is to change the narrative about women, class, and cultural differences by reclaiming religious language for the good. We hope to further gender, economic, and racial equality by doing so.
Method
We come together with audiences to ritually participate in the change we want to see.
Why
Progressives have had good reasons to abandon religious language, but in the process they’ve allowed a racist, patriarchal oligarchy to wield it entirely for evil. Cultural traditions have a unique emotional and intellectual power, and because the right’s interpretation goes unopposed, it’s one of their most powerful weapons.
The Audience
We want to help audiences see their own myths in a new way that better reflects their experiences, delight them with humor and intellectual excitement, and illuminate the systems that shape the world we all live in, in order to perhaps challenge them.
Why We Need Your Help
No theater supports itself on ticket sales alone. Our play is both new and experimental, so outside support is crucial!
We are paying all of our artists and crew members, and covering their travel expenses and lodging for 7 days in New York City. We also need to pay for marketing, shipping, and rehearsal space expenses.
We are keeping ticket prices very low to make this play accessible to everyone, no matter their income level, and to ensure good audiences.
Have I mentioned, we’re paying our artists?
Support Experimental Theater
The human race has always needed artistic innovations for its spiritual life to keep pace with its manic technological and social advances. But artistic innovations are impossible if they must depend on commercial success, because by definition commercial success supports what’s already familiar to audiences. The public benefits from new ways of doing things and perspectives that deviate from the dominant commercial viewpoint.
We appreciate your support!
